Tencent Doctorwork and Trusted Doctors are reportedly joining forces to corner China’s fast-growing healthtech market, which is witnessing a surge in demand as patients seek help from the country’s under-resourced, overburdened public health system.

Online apps are providing a way to gain access to medical services ranging from advice and a way to book an appointment through to diagnostic tools, all of which help improve hospital efficiency and reduce waiting times.

By combining to create one of China’s largest online-to-offline healthcare platforms, the resulting entity, Tencent Trusted, will have an established countrywide network where doctors can freelance at daytime centres.

Yicai Global, citing an internal letter sent by Trusted Doctor chief executive Martin Shen to employees, the venture will have 33 clinics in eight cities and will be the biggest private medical care company.

Earlier this week, Union Medical Healthcare announced it has teamed up with Tencent Doctorwork to offer a safe and reliable childhood vaccination programme.

The healthtech partner will be responsible for inviting eligible candidates to the company’s screening centres where the Hong Kong-listed medical care provider’s paediatricians will manage the inoculations.

Tencent Doctorwork is an internet and medical platform jointly funded by Tencent, Medlinker, GAW Capital and Sequoia Capital China and which has established clinics in Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen.

It expects to open 300 clinics under its direct operations in the next three years, connecting to 3,000 associated surgeries and deploying 30,000 self-serve health inspection terminals, according to Union Medical’s statement.

Tencent Doctorwork has a comprehensive medical management system and cloud-based service and a health administration information technology platform.

Founded in 2014 as a social media and career development platform for Chinese doctors, Trusted Doctor entered the offline clinic sector two years ago.

It has about 430,000 certified doctor users, six brick-and-mortar centres, and plans to open a further 31 locations and 10 surgeries where doctors can provide freelance service to patients by the end of 2018.
