PerkinElmer buys Euroimmun for USD 1.3bn

PerkinElmer is using the acquisition of Euroimmun of Germany for about USD 1.30 billion to boost its footprint in the autoimmune and allergy diagnostic markets, and offer new infectious disease capabilities to customers in China

The Lübeck-headquartered company produces test systems and devices, and software for the full automated processing and evaluation of automation, for the laboratory diagnosis of autoimmune and infectious diseases, allergies, and for gene analyses.

With capabilities across immunology, cell biology, histology, biochemistry and molecular biology, Euroimmun is expected to generate revenue of USD 310.00 million this year, and had an average top line growth of 19.0 per cent over the last five years.

In 2016, the company booked sales in more than 130 countries worldwide, with China accounted for 45.0 per cent of total turnover (Europe, Middle East & Africa: 30.0 per cent; Americas: 5.0 per cent; and Rest of World: 20.0 per cent).

PerkinElmer noted its restructured global diagnostics division generated revenue of USD 602.50 million in the financial year ended 1st January 2017, and included brands such as Sciclone, Vanadis and XRpad.

The Euroimmun acquisition is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2017 and will create a portfolio focused on: reproductive health; autoimmune, infectious disease and allergy testing; gene analyses.

It will also comprise genomics offerings for oncology and other molecular tests through a wide range of instruments, reagents, assay platforms and software.

Last month PerkinElmer sold its medical imaging business, a supplier of flat panel X-ray detectors that serve as components for industrial, medical and dental use, to Varex in order to accelerate growth in higher priority areas.

The Massachusetts-headquartered company markets its products and service for the diagnostics, food, environmental, industrial, life sciences research and laboratory services markets in over 150 countries.
